Traveling on from St. Augustine?

To New Orleans: It is cheapest to take a train from Palatka, especially if Amtrak is having a fare sale going that way, but it is difficult to get to Palatka from here.  Cheapest is hitchhiking on route 207.  If you are in a group of 4 or more, we may be able to give you a ride.  Which hostel to go to?  Read the reviews at www.hostelz.com and see for yourself.

Savannah:

www.savannahpensione.com

Getting there: Cheapest is the bus, though sometimes Amtrak will have fare sales.  Savannah hostel is no longer a hostel, but a pension.  IE.  they don't rent individual beds, but rooms.  Least expensive lodging in Savannah.  For a private room, ask for 'The Carriage House'.

Charleston:  Bus is easiest.  The NotSo Hostel.

Washington DC and New York:  Train is best and cheapest if you can find a fare sale on Amtrak.  JetBlue Airways from Orlando has cheap fares to NY, and Southwest and Air Tran fly from Jacksonville.

www.skybus.com now flies directly to St. Augustine from Portsmouth, NH (50 miles from Boston), Columbus, OH, and Greensboro, NC.  If you book early enough you can get a $10 fare!!

Headed to California?  Check out WWW.INCADVENTURES.COM for trips to Yosemite, Grand Canyon etc....

Between Richmond, DC, Philly, NY and Boston, take the Chinatown buses.  Waaay better and cheaper than Greyhound.

Other Places to Stay

Florida

HI - Everglades Hostel, a really cool place from which to visit the everglades (they have tours, and rent canoes and bikes)

Gram's Place Hostel in Tampa - Just what a hostel should be....supercool!  Mark has done a great job converting two side-by-side houses into a great, funky, place to stay.  Too much stuff to list...hand poured hot tub (4 tons of concrete!), Bird's nest rooftop deck, British phone booth, outside BYOB bar, skylights, and ....music!  400 CD's of 'roots' music, played all day on a low power FM transmitter...Check this place out!!

Orlando (Kissimmee) hostel, aka  the Palm Lakefront Resort IS OPEN as a hostel.  The number to call is (407) 396-1759.

Floyd's Hostel - Ft. Lauderdale.  More of a crew house than a traveler's hostel.  Try the Beach Hostel.

Deauville Hostel - Newest one in Ft. Lauderdale, looks good!

The Tropics Hostel - On Collins Ave in Miami and a great place to stay from all reports we're received from backpackers.

The Clay Hostel Miami

HI - Clearwater Beach Hostel - They're Closed Permanently :-(

Key West Hostel - $35 a night seems pretty steep, but you can't touch the price elsewhere.  If you're two people, a much better option is the Angelina Guesthouse on Angela Street.

Angelina Guesthouse  in Key West rates.  They tend to book way in advance!
